scratches on your paint?

1. wash thouroughly

2. clay bar

3. wash again

4. bust out the DA

5. continue using your DA and various rubbing compounds until paint is flawless.

6. apply 6 coats of wax and a final coat of glaze

or just pay someone. . .

THAT IS SO MUCH!!! It isn't even that deep of a scratch(the others are just dirt from driving yesterday), I though some vigorous polishing should do it.

If it's only clearcoat that's affected, maybe try going to AutoZone and getting a buffing/polishing kit? They make some that attach to a drill end, or you can get an old-fashioned one that you hand-buff.

wash and clay and wash and wax with a cleaner wax then use a finish wax. The DA stuff is only if you have one. A clay bar will take a lot of stuff out as long as it didn't fully damage the clear and a high quality wax will mask the damage pretty well. I use Meguires Ultimate paste wax on my scratched to hell NB and from certain angles you never would know there were scratches there.

It doesn't look like a major scratch, so hopefully it is a clear coat. I need to get something to apply polish. My current pads are sooooooooooooooo bad.

Phew, thank god something can fix it. Even though it is from traveling on the highway and the scratch is minor, it will utterly annoy the living crap out of me.

Just get on it soon and don't let it fester and oxidize the paint. Clay bars are wonderful things when used properly. Just use plenty of lube and you will be fine.

What type of lube? Some form of water+soap, or quick detailer, or maybe K&Y

Cheap route is when you are washing your car and using the two bucket method you can use the car wash soap and water, but if you buy a clay kit it generally comes with a microfiber towel and quick detailer and the clay. The Meguires kit also includes a sample size of the cleaner wax which has abrasives in it to help polish a little bit. I just don't really like the finish of the cleaner wax so I always put a coat of stuff I know that makes pussies pop. . . I like layering waxes, you get better depth and protection and shine.

Alright, fair enough. Time to get on that clay bar then. Slat season is upon us. . . and I hate it. Can't wash my car at my house because the pipes are frozen outside. I just hate winter so much.

You may get away with using spray detailer to clean the area affected but you run the possibility of introducing new scratches if it is really dirty. If it is only that area you can probably get away with a touchless car wash and then getting it dry and putting it in the garage to help you perform the correction.

There is a do it yourself carwash place in town, so I go there. Their water is warm, and it doesn't have those high pressure hoses, so I can completely clean the car. Luckily this is the only area.

Nice. It shouldn't take too long to take care of it. Just watch the drive clean video on clay baring a car. use a small chunk of the clay and straight lines not in little swirls.

My advice: It looks like a surface scratch only in the clearcoat. My experience has been that white scratches like that are usually only in the clearcoat and will polish out without much trouble. Wash it, then use some clearcoat polish. You shouldn't need a really aggressive polish unless it feels/looks deep. It should buff out with some elbow grease. Don't go crazy on it because you don't want to remove too much of the clearcoat (polishing is removing layers of paint/clearcoat). If you want much more in depth advice on how to take care of that, you should consider watching the following videos from /Drive's Driveclean segment (I know it's a lot to watch, but you can try skipping around):

(Basic wash techniques)

(How and why to use a clay bar)

(Top 10 detailing mistakes to avoid)

(Paint correction on a classic Porsche, shows you how to renew tired paint. He uses a clay bar among other things)

(Sealant and Wax info and how to use)

don't be scared, it is one of the easiest things to do, but if you drop the clay it is dead to you and unusable.

aren't you studying to be an engineer? and specific instructions scare you?
